When the invitation to the CCWA arrived, I wanted Belgian wines in the competition. Belgium is, by definition, a cool climate country. To have its wines judged by an international panel of wine professionals would be a primeur. What exactly is the definition of cool climate, anyway? To the competition, its demarcation is geographical and sun-hours related. Others go historical: old world vs emerging countries and regions. And then there is the geological definition where high altitude and cooler conditions relieve wine grapes and other crops from ever heating growth locations due to climate change. Geographically and historically, Belgium has everything to gain when it surfs on the hype of wines. Or as we at Cru-design like to put it: Climate Change wines.
